Jaycee Kidnap: Phillip Garrido Gets 431 Years

Phillip Garrido has been sentenced to a total of 431 years in jail for his role in the kidnap and sex assault of Jaycee Lee Dugard.

The 60-year-old's wife Nancy has been jailed for life, with a minimum of 36 years.

The couple kidnapped Jaycee in 1991 when she was just 11-years old outside her home in South Lake Tahoe, California, and kept her captive for almost two decades.

Garrido, already a parolled sex offender, fathered two children with Jaycee, and pleaded guilty when she was freed in August 2009.

When he kidnapped Jaycee it was only three years after he was released from prison, where he served only 11 years of a 50-year sentence for a rape.

His wife was jailed for between 36 years and life, after a plea bargain with prosecutors and her lawyer, Stephen Tapson, read a statement to the court on her behalf.

He said his client acknowledging that "what she did was evil" that she was sorry and that "words are not enough".

Mr Tapson filed a request asking that Nancy be allowed to see her husband one last time before they start their sentences.

In addition he requested that she be allowed to remain the courtroom for her husband's sentencing. The judge denied both requests.

Jaycee's ordeal in captivity with Garrido and his wife came to light when she was freed almost two years ago, 18 years after she was snatched while walking to a school bus stop.

The Garridos were indicted in October on 18 charges including three counts of kidnapping, six of rape and seven of forced lewd acts upon a child.

They also faced charges of false imprisonment and one count of possession or control of child pornography.

In a deal with prosecutors agreed in April, he pleaded guilty to counts including kidnap, kidnap for the purpose of sex, forcible rape and forcible lewd acts.

And his wife pleaded guilty to kidnap and rape. Both have waived their right to appeal and the state of California has paid Jaycee $20 million in compensation for her suffering.

Jaycee was found alive nearly two years ago in the secret backyard compound of Garrido's home in Antioch, east of San Francisco, where he had imprisoned her.

Since being freed, she has been living at a secret location with her family including her two daughters by Garrido, now 13 and 16.

Transcript Reveals Disturbing Details of Dugard Kidnapping, Captivity

PLACERVILLE—

Phillip Garrido reportedly used mind games, a stun gun and a locked room to keep 11-year-old Jaycee Lee Dugard from getting away.

Details about the kidnapping of 11-year-old Dugard, and her 18-year captivity in the Garrido’s Antioch home are being released in Grand Jury transcripts.

When Jaycee Lee Dugard was kidnapped on June 10th, 1991, Phillip Garrido used a stun gun while Nancy, his wife, grabbed the young girl off her South Lake Tahoe Street while she was walking to school. Dugard described the abduction: “All the sudden his hand shoots out of the window and I’m shocked and I stumble back into the bushes... I feel my whole body is … wouldn’t work. It was tingly and I can’t … nothing works.”

She went on to say that after she was in the car, and Nancy was sitting on top of her, she heard a voice in the front, and the man said “I can’t believe we got away with it.”

To keep her from running away, Dugard says Phillip kept her in a locked room with an iron door and an iron gate, he also carried a stun gun around with him. During the first year, Garrido would go on what Dugard called sexual “runs” or binges, which would last up to 3 days, about every other week.

Garrido would tell Dugard the reason he took her was to prevent him from kidnapping someone else. He admitted he had a problem to her. Jaycee told the Grand Jury, “Because Phillip always said, you know, in the beginning he said I was helping him, and that, you know, he had a sex problem, and that, you know, he got me so he wouldn’t have to do this to anybody else, so I was helping him.”

These sexual “runs” gradually became less frequent, and according to Jaycee the last time Garrido had sex with her was when she conceived her second daughter.

According to Jaycee, after about a year of captivity, Phillip went away for about a month and Nancy took care of her. They told her Phillip was going on vacation, but really he went to prison.

The transcript also says Phillip served time with Nancy’s uncle in prison, and that is how the two met. According to Jaycee, the couple married while Phillip was in prison.

During questioning at the Grand Jury hearing, Jaycee was asked why she didn’t run away with her two daughters. She said, “I just felt like there was no other place for me.”

She was also asked about when she was discovered by law enforcement in August 2009. The garrido’s had her go by another name when in public. According to Jaycee, a female officer “said, ‘you need to tell me your name’, and I said, ‘I can’t’ because I hadn’t said my name in 18 years”. Officers gave Jaycee a slip of paper to have her write her name, and she wrote her mother’s name on it.

Phillip and Nancy Garrido were sentenced Thursday morning at the El Dorado County Courthouse. Right after their sentencing, the judge ruled in favor of a motion filed by media outlets to release the Grand Jury transcripts. The judge did, however, choose to redact 34 pages of the 157-page transcript because they were “disgusting” and amounted to what the District Attorney called “pornography”.

El Dorado County District Attorney Vern Pierson said when Dugard was called to testify before the grand jury the “questions we and I asked were about what exactly happened, and some of those answers are so graphic and so horrific that it’s not really something …. To release those publicly would further victimize her (Dugard)”.

  1. A total pervert, he commits another crime after just being released from serving part of another lengthy one. He surely deservs this. One can not begin to imagine the level of damage done to this young lady and her daughters over the years. No human being deserves that.
